Not easily. It had been running trinity for around 24hrs, and the
post-mortem file it dumped doesn't seem too helpful.

It _looks_ like a hard out-of-ram event and not necessarily a filesyste=
m=20
implementation problem.

One of the systems I work with has zero swap but still allows overcommi=
t=20
in the VM. It would do things like this all the time back in developmen=
t=20
(and I suspect it still does but the developers got rid of those pesky=20
logs). Not necessarily this exact error, but lots of them with the same=
=20
"feel".

You are actually triggering two bugs, only the second being in btrfs co=
de.

The VM_BUG_ON_PAGE() in cleancache_get_page() (mm/cleancache.c) is goin=
g=20
off first. This is presumably the ram exhaustion event, which is an=20
outer problem taking place in your system (e.g. the real cause).

This floats back to the __do_readpage() which doesn't (and almost=20
cannot) figure out how the page validation failed

if (!PageUptodate(page)) {
if (cleancache_get_page(page) =3D=3D 0) {
BUG_ON(blocksize !=3D PAGE_SIZE);
unlock_extent(tree, start, end);
goto out;
}
}

Which (improperly) ends with this suspect bit from the out: in=20
__do_readpage() where the unlock_page() is called unconditionally.

out:
if (!nr) {
if (!PageError(page))
SetPageUptodate(page);
unlock_page(page);
}

I _think_ the call to unlock_page() _should_ have an if=20
(PageLocked(page)) in front of it.

if (!PageError(page))
SetPageUptodate(page);
- unlock_page(page);
+ if (PageLocked(page))

}

That said, the question of what your system is going to do with the VM=20
memory exhausted is a bigger problem.

Pre-Script :: this is not an 3.18 problem. I traced it out in 3.16.
It _looks_ like a hard out-of-ram event and not necessarily a filesys=
tem
implementation problem.
One of the systems I work with has zero swap but still allows overcom=
mit
in the VM. It would do things like this all the time back in developm=
ent
(and I suspect it still does but the developers got rid of those pesk=
y
logs). Not necessarily this exact error, but lots of them with the sa=
me
"feel".
You are actually triggering two bugs, only the second being in btrfs =
code.
The VM_BUG_ON_PAGE() in cleancache_get_page() (mm/cleancache.c) is go=
ing
off first. This is presumably the ram exhaustion event, which is an
outer problem taking place in your system (e.g. the real cause).
This floats back to the __do_readpage() which doesn't (and almost
cannot) figure out how the page validation failed
if (!PageUptodate(page)) {
if (cleancache_get_page(page) =3D=3D 0) {
BUG_ON(blocksize !=3D PAGE_SIZE);
unlock_extent(tree, start, end);
goto out;
}
}
Which (improperly) ends with this suspect bit from the out: in
__do_readpage() where the unlock_page() is called unconditionally.
if (!nr) {
if (!PageError(page))
SetPageUptodate(page);
unlock_page(page);
}
I _think_ the call to unlock_page() _should_ have an if
(PageLocked(page)) in front of it.

if (!PageError(page))
SetPageUptodate(page);
- unlock_page(page);
+ if (PageLocked(page))

}
return 0;
}
That said, the question of what your system is going to do with the V=
M
memory exhausted is a bigger problem.
